Marie Fredriksson of Roxette has died

Sadly, we have to publish this press note informing about Marie’s passing away.

All my thoughts are with her husband and her kids as well as her close ones. All my love to you.

Marie Fredriksson of Roxette has died

It is with great sadness we have to announce that Marie Fredriksson of Roxette has passed away in the morning of December 9, following a 17-year long battle with cancer.

Marie was born on the 30th of May 1958 in the south of Sweden, starting her musical career in nearby Halmstad where she became friends with future Roxette companion Per Gessle. Following a successful solo debut in 1984, Marie Fredriksson became one of Sweden’s most loved and successful artists. In 1986 she teamed up with Per in Roxette with the ambition to reach outside Sweden, and together they started a historical journey that in the coming years would make them one of the biggest pop acts in the world.

The debut single ”Neverending Love” followed by the album ”Pearls of Passion” in 1986 made them stars in Sweden, but international recognition would have to wait until the single ”The Look” from Roxette’s second album ”Look Sharp!” in the spring of 1989 opened the doors to a massive international breakthrough. It was their first No 1 single on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and would be followed by ”Listen To Your Heart”, ”It Must Have Been Love” and ”Joyride”, as well as numerous worldwide radio staples like ”Dressed For Success”, ”How Do You Do!”, ”Sleeping In My Car”, ”Dangerous”, “Fading Like A Flower” and many more.

The massive success with sales of more than 80 million records paved the way for several worldwide tours, cementing Marie Fredriksson’s reputation as a sensational live performer. She owned the stage, commanded the band and had the audience in the palm of her hand. As great as she was in the studio, the stage was her natural habitat. This unique artistry and energy helped to create a lasting bond between her and millions of passionate fans around the globe.

In 2002, Marie was diagnosed with a severe brain tumor, receiving an aggressive treatment that took its toll but ultimately was successful. Thanks to her extremely strong fighting spirit, Marie by 2009 was able to start a gradual return to the world’s stages. The unlikely second coming of Roxette resulted in several new albums, and tours that again put the duo in front of screaming, smiling and crying crowds all over the world. During the comeback years Marie was an amazing trooper, overcoming the many rigors of touring in order to meet her fans on stage again and again. But by 2016, the show was finally over when Marie´s doctors advised her to stop touring and focus on her health.

Marie leaves us a grand musical legacy. Her amazing voice – both strong and sensitive – and her magical live performances will be remembered by all of us who was lucky enough to witness them. But we also remember a wonderful person with a huge appetite for life, and woman with a very big heart who cared for everybody she met.

Per Gessle comments:

“Time goes by so quickly. It’s not that long ago we spent days and nights in my tiny apartment in Halmstad, listening to music we loved, sharing impossible dreams. And what a dream we eventually got to share!

Thank you, Marie, thanks for everything. You were an outstanding musician, a master of the voice, an amazing performer. Thanks for painting my black and white songs in the most beautiful colours. You were the most wonderful friend for over 40 years. I’m proud, honoured and happy to have been able to share so much of your time, talent, warmth, generosity and sense of humour. All my love goes out to you and your family. Things will never be the same.

P.”

Marie Fredriksson’s husband Mikael Bolyos and her two children Josefin and Oscar kindly ask for respect in their grief.
The funeral will take place in silence with only Marie’s closest family present.

Marie Fredriksson perofrmed at Citytunneln opening

Marie Fredriksson performed yesterday together with her husband Mikael Bolyos at the inauguration ceremony of Citytunneln, a 17-kilometer rail link between Malmö Central Station and the Öresund Bridge. As the grand finale, HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden officially opened the tunnel for traffic.

The ceremony was held next to the Malmö Central Station free to the public. Other artists who performed at the ceremony included Wilmer-X, Timbuktu, and Ola Salo.

You can find pictures of the event on Expressen and Sydsvenskan.

Stina from Denmark also recorded the performance and uploaded it to YouTube.

Marie Fredriksson on tour with Roxette at Night of the Proms

Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, or what’s the same, Roxette, are touring with Night of the Proms in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. The tour started in Antwerp on October 23 and will go on until December 2oth in Dortmund.

You can follow all about Night of the Proms and what’s happening around Roxette on our sister websites Roxetteblog and The Daily Roxette.

Rumour after rumour about Roxette’s comeback; Night of the proms 2009 true?

During the past days, a lot of rumours about Roxette’s comeback have been heard on the Roxette online community, below you’ll find a summary:

– Not a rumour, but already confirmed by Per at Twitter: Roxette albums will be remastered and re-released in Autumn. Open is: which albums are we talking about? Which bonuses?

– Roxette to play at “New Wave” event in Latvia in July from The Daily Roxette. Even though this was reported by an important Latvian newspaper, the management hasn’t confirmed the news yet (but hasn’t denied it either). Wait and see.

– Roxette at Night of the Proms 2009:
Last week some fans from the German forum found a hidden Html code on the NOTP German fanpage which announced Roxette as one of the main acts at NOTP 2009 edition. Tour promoters didn’t confirm this (but didn’t deny it either), since all artists will be announced at a press conference on the 5th of May, 17:00 CET.

TDR User Remco found following text on the NOTP website:

“In the beginning of May we will announce another big artist. I am quite sure that this will be “hot news” for whoever loves true pop music. … We expect ticket sales to go super fast after this announcement”, according to organiser Jan Vereecke.”

Which again, makes everybody think Roxette is one of the artists participating in the event, true pop music…

And then, after I read that there will be a big press conference to announce the artists, I started to think, **IF** Roxette are performing, would they have time to attend the press conference? A quick check at Per Gessle’s current tour plan showed me that he has a show on the day before, May 4th, in London, and on the day after, 6th May, in Amsterdam. The press conference is in Antwerpen, which is not at all far away from these cities, so IF they are part of NOTP attending the press conference shouldn’t be a problem.

– Marie to perform with Per, where?
Per already commented Marie would join him on the stage during the tour. The big question is, where? Most people guessed Stockholm would be the best logical choice. But I started to think, in connection to NOTP press conference and that there seems to be something happening with Roxette this year, that maybe London (or Amsterdam) would also be an option.

These are only speculations on the rumours. There is nothing confirmed, so we’ll have to wait at least until the 5th of May to know what happens with NOTP, and regarding Marie’s performance with Per: just be surprised.

Marie Fredriksson to join Crown Princess Victoria at Stadshuset gala in June

Written by Lars-Erik_Olson for The Daily Roxette

Marie Fredriksson will be one of the celebrity guests attending a June 18 gala at Stadshuset (Stockholm City Hall) where Crown Princess Victoria will be handing out this year’s prizes from the Marianne and Sigvard Bernadotte Artist Fund. The gala is even more special this year as Marianne Bernadotte, who is Victoria’s great aunt, is celebrating her 85th birthday.

Marie is expected to perform during the event, along with Marianne Bernadotte’s close friend Lill Lindfors, opera singer Barbara Hendricks with Staffan Scheja, and violinist Christian Svarfvar. Other special guests announced at this morning’s press event, held at the Grand Hôtel, include ABBA singer Agnetha Fältskog, but it is uncertain for now whether she too will perform.
